Body Painting is a photo intense examination of the emerging art of painting bodies with non-toxic paints. From face painting children to the creation of painted "clothes" Doug Mitchel follows ten artists as they apply paint to skin. Each artist is represented by one chapter, each chapter follows a "paint job" from the initial concept to the application of the final details. Each design is different, but all are colorful and creative. With over 450 color photographs printed on 144 pages, this book documents the techniques and tools used by established artists. Application methods include the brush, airbrush and even markers. Each method has advantages and disadvantages, each has its place and each is covered in detail in this new book from Wolfgang Publications. In addition to the photo sequences with descriptive captions, each chapter includes an interview with the artist. Topics include the way in which the artist learned his or her trade, preferred tools and which paint they prefer to use. The discussion of paint choices includes airbrushed body make up, textile acrylics, liquid latex and markers from companies like Crayola. As pointed out in the captions and the interviews, each material has good points and bad, all are covered in Body Painting. The best teachers are the men and women who have already mastered the skill. Body Painting presents the accumulated wisdom and experience of ten "teachers" each of who has a lesson to share with the readers. With a wealth of photos Body Painting is both a colorful look at an emerging art form, and a very useful how-to book.

Body art is art made on, with, or consisting of, the human body. The most common forms of body art are tattoos and body piercings, but other types include scarification, branding, scalpelling, shaping (for example tightlacing of corsets), full body tattoo and body painting. More extreme body art can involve things such as mutilation or pushing the body to its physical limits. For example, one of Marina Abramovis works involved dancing until she collapsed from exhaustion, while one of Dennis Oppenheims betterknown works saw him lying in the sunlight with a book on his chest, until his skin, excluding that covered by the book, was badly sunburned. It can even consist of the arrangement and dissection of preserved bodies in an artistic fashion, as in the case of the plastinated bodies used in the travelling Body Worlds exhibit. Body art is also a subcategory of performance art, in which artists use or abuse their own body to make their particular statements. In more recent times, body became a subject of much broader discussions and treatments that cannot be reduced to the body art in its common understanding. In "Conceptual Art and Painting," a companion to his Essays on Art & Language, Charles Harrison reconsiders Conceptual Art in light of renewed interest in the original movement and of the various forms of "neo-Conceptual" art. He discusses developments in the Art & Language movement since 1991, during which time there have been major retrospectives of its work at the Musee du Jeu de Paume in Paris, the Antonio Tapies Foundation in Barcelona, and PS1 in New York. Harrison also addresses larger issues of painting as an art, the representation of the female body, and the relation of art to its audience.

Artist, architect, poet and philosopher, Leon Battista Alberti revolutionized the history of art with his theories of perspective in On Painting (1435). Inspired by the order and beauty inherent in nature, his groundbreaking work sets out the principles of distance, dimension and proportion; instructs the painter on how to use the rules of composition, representation, light and colour to create work that is graceful and pleasing to the eye; and stipulates the moral and artistic pre-requisites of the successful painter. On Painting had an immediate and profound influence on Italian Renaissance artists including Ghiberti, Fra Angelico and Veneziano and on later figures such as Leonardo da Vinci, and remains a compelling theory of art.

In 1869 Japan, a young woman escapes the confines of her arranged marriage by painting memories of her lover on mulberry paper. She secretly wraps the painting around a ceramic pot that’s bound for Europe. In France, a disenchanted young man works as a clerk at an import shop. When he opens the box from Japan, he discovers the brilliant watercolor of two lovers locked in an embrace under a plum tree. He steals the painting and hides it in his room. With each viewing, he sees something different, and gradually the painting transforms him. Set outside the new capital of Tokyo during the Meiji Restoration and in Paris during the Franco-Prussian War, "The Painting" is a richly imagined story of four characters whose lives are delicately and powerfully entwined: Ayoshi, the painter, pines for her lover as she dutifully attends to her husband; Ayoshi’s husband, Hayashi, a government official who’s been disfigured in a deadly fire, has his own well of secret yearnings; Jorgen, wounded by the war and by life, buries himself in work at the Paris shop; and the shop owner’s sister, Natalia, who shows Jorgen the true message of the painting. Exquisitely written and utterly spellbinding, "The Painting" reveals the enduring effect of art in ordinary life and marks the debut of a skilled stylist and first-rate storyteller.

"The Disabled Body in Contemporary Art" is the first book to cross the disciplines of art history and disability studies. Millett-Gallant visually analyzes images of the body in visual culture–from painting, sculpture, photography, and performance art to medical displays to the nineteenth- and twentieth-century freak show–placing the work of disabled and non-disabled artists in critical dialogue. Pursuing the agenda of disability studies, this book examines western art history through a new lens and draws parallels to sexism, racism, classism, and heterosexism/homophobia.

Dynamic Color Painting for the Beginner

Dynamic Color Painting for the Beginner

$4.84

Painting in oil or acrylics is one of the most popular of the fine arts, with an enormous body of lore for the aspiring painter to master. Diane Edison offers a new approach that explains traditional techniques and materials, but also emphasizes expression and creativity. Edison wants the new painter to feel fearless and free to experiment. Her method, honed though years of teaching painting and drawing, quickly overcomes the stiff, forced feeling experienced by most beginning painters. She believes that the dynamic use of color is the key to unlocking and understanding the possibilities in painting, and she offers a practical introduction to color theory and design to point the way. Her book includes inspiring art, much of it contemporary, along with clear instructional illustrations; her step-by-step exercises have been tested on hundreds of students with no prior painting experience. A successful artist herself, with an unmistakable personal style, Edison shares not only knowledge and experience, but also a strong sense of what it means to be an artist.

Body Art: Performing the Subject

Body Art: Performing the Subject

An examination of the social and cultural significance of body art by a major new voice. The past few years have seen an explosion of interest in body art, in which the artist’s body is integral to the work of art. With the revoking of NEA funding for such artists as Karen Finley, Tim Miller, and others, public awareness and media coverage of body-oriented performances have increased. Yet the roots of body art extend to the 1960s and before. In this definitive book, Amelia Jones explores body art projects from the 1960s and 1970s and relates their impact to the work of body artists active today, providing a new conceptual framework for defining postmodernism in the visual arts. Jones begins with a discussion of the shifting intellectual terrain of the 1950s and 1960s, focusing on the work of Ana Mendieta. Moving to an examination of the reception of Jackson Pollock’s "performative" acts of painting, she argues that Pollock is a pivotal figure between modernism and postmodernism. The book continues with explorations of Vito Acconci and Hannah Wilke, whose practices exemplify a new kind of performance that arose in the late 1960s, one that represents a dramatic shift in the conception of the artistic subject. Jones then surveys the work of a younger generation of artists — including Laurie Anderson, Orlan, Maureen Connor, Lyle Ashton Harris, Laura Aguilar, and Bob Flanagan — whose recent work integrates technology and issues of identity to continue to expand the critique begun in earlier body art projects. Embracing an exhilarating mix of methodologies and perspectives (including feminism, queer theory, philosophy, psychoanalysis, and literary theory), this rigorous and elegantexamination of body art provides rich historical insight and essential context that rethinks the parameters of postmodern culture.

PHILOSOPHY LANDSCAPE PAINTINGS. WILLIAM M. BRYANT. Art viewed as a whole is but the splendid spectrum of the white light of Truth shining through the prism of human sensibility. THE ST. LOUIS NEWS COMPANY. ST. LOUIS, MO. PREFACE. In extant works on the philosophy of art landscape painting is passed over with very brief mention. It is the purpose of the followiig pages to supply what is lacking in this respect. In working out this purpose it has assuned three principal phases. The first phase is unfolded in the proof that the modern scientific view of nature, together with its necessary complement the scientific view of man, lnust first have been developed before true la, ndscape a, rt could exist. The second phase takes shape a in the tracing out of the elements, external and internal, which enter int, o works of art of this class b in indicating the relation of lailtlsenpe painting to the other forms of art, and c ill defining and accounting for the types into which the products of this form of art iaturally fall. Finally the tili, d phase presents the realized uuit1x of the first 2nd second phalses in a brief eketch of the actual historical development of landscape painting. And here the primary airn has been to show the centrel significance of the successive phases in the developlllen t of landscale painting through an interpretation of works of leading artists in the several schools. If this purpose has been successfully wrought out the rolume now presented to the reader can hardly fail to prove serviceable as an introduction to the stltly of the philosophy of art in general. As to form that has been made as little techni- cal as possible. While in the first place the theme isphilosophy, it is also in the second place philo- sophy as applied to, or rather as inrolred in the prodncts of one species of art. There is, there- fore, greater range here for the use of imagery than is the case i11 the treatment of the nature and func- tions of thought simply as such. I hare, therefore, not hesitated to make use of imagery where that has not only snggested itself spontaneously but has also proved no less adequate than abstract terms to the expression of the thonght it was desired to convey. My obligitions to Hegel in particular and to F T. Pischer and otlrcr writers in general are acknowledged in the body of the boolr. I11 auothcr direction, however, I am under specid obligation aid make record of it here with sincere pleasure. It is to my Art Class, the members of which have for more tllail fire years engaged with untlagging intlerest in the tracing out of the philos- ophy of art through its historical derelopment, that I owe the coustiut stiznullls to the studies of which this volume is a direct result. CONTENTS, INTRODUCTION. ART AN EXPRESSION OF THOUGHT AND SENTIMENT. PART I. "The earliest form of painting was with colours ground in water. Egyptian artists three thousand years B. C. used this method, and various mediums, such as wax and mastic, were added as a fixative. It was what is now known as tempera painting. The Greeks acquired their knowledge of the art from the Egyptians, and later the Romans dispersed it throughout Europe. They probably introduced tempera painting into this country for decoration of the walls of their houses. The English monks visited the Continent and learnt the art of miniature painting for illuminating their manuscripts by the same process. Owing to opaque white being mixed with the colours the term of painting in body-colour came in use. Painting in this manner was employed by artists throughout Europe in making sketches for their oil paintings."

His work from 1955 to 1965 was pivotal, exercising an enormous impact on the subsequent development of pop, minimalism, and conceptual art in the United States and Europe. This is the first publication to approach Johns’s work of this ten-year period through a thematic framework. It examines the artist’s interest in the condition of painting as a medium, a practice, and an instrument of encoded meaning through several interrelated motifs: the target, the "device," the naming of colors, and the imprint of the body. In this handsome book, leading scholars, a conservator, and a contemporary artist consider Johns’s activity in this critical decade and discuss many of his iconic paintings, such as Target with Four Faces (1955), Diver (1962), Periscope (Hart Crane) (1963), and Arrive-Depart (1963). Their new critical and historical perspectives are grounded in an unusually close visual and material analysis of Johns’s work.

12(2-each) Selected Amedeo Modigliani Fine Art Nude Paintings Note Card Boxed Set

12(2-each) Selected Amedeo Modigliani Fine Art Nude Paintings Note Card Boxed Set

$18

Amedeo Clemente Modigliani (July 12, 1884 January 24, 1920) became known for his paintings and sculptures in a modern style characterized by mask-like faces and elongation of form. He died in Paris of tubercular meningitis, exacerbated by poverty, overwork and addiction to alcohol and narcotics. Modigliani painted a series 26 or more female nudes mostly between 1916 and 1918. His nudes have often been considered lascivious, even pornographic, in part because they are depicted with body hair, but perhaps also due to the artists reputation for debauchery. His nickname, Modi, rhymes with the French word maudit (accursed), a name he very likely acquired because of his lifestyle. Modigliani died penniless and destitutemanaging only one solo exhibition in his life and giving his work away in exchange for meals in restaurants. Since his death his reputation has soared. Nine novels, a play, a documentary and three feature films have been devoted to his life. In November 2010, a painting of a nude by Amedeo Modigliani, part of a series of nudes he created around 1917, sold for more than $68.9m (42.7m) at an auction in New Yorka record for the artist’s work. His longtime lover Jeanne Hebuterne committed suicide a day after he died.

Excerpt: Egon Schiele (June 12, 1890 October 31, 1918) (German pronunciation: , approximately SHEE-leh) was an Austrian painter. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. Schiele’s work is noted for its intensity, and the many self-portraits the artist produced. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele’s paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism, although still strongly associated with the art nouveau movement (Jugendstil). The most important collection of Schiele’s work is housed in the Leopold Museum, Vienna. Egon Schiele was born in Tulln on the Danube. His father, Adolph Schiele, worked for the Austrian State Railways as a station master; his mother, Marie Soukup(ová), was from Krumau, in Bohemia. As a child, he attended the school run by the Stift Klosterneuburg, where his arts teacher K.L. Strauch recognized and supported Schiele’s artistic talent. Egon Schiele, Self-portrait, 1912When Schiele was 15 years old, his father died from syphilis, and he became a ward of his maternal uncle, Leopold Czihaczec, who became distressed by Schiele’s lack of interest in academic studies, yet recognized his passion and talent for art. In 1906 Schiele applied at the Kunstgewerbeschule (School of Arts and Crafts) in Vienna, where Gustav Klimt had once studied. Within his first year there, Schiele was sent, at the insistence of several faculty members, to the more traditional Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna in 1906. There, he studied painting and drawing, but was frustrated by the schools conservatism. Records show that Adolf Hitler was rejected by the Akademie in 1907; this has led to a misconception that Schiele and Hitler knew each

In all probability the greatest Victorian critic of art and society, John Ruskin had an enormous influence on his age and our own, and like so many Victorians of the age, he had astonishing energy. While carrying on a voluminous correspondence with the intellectual luminaries of his day, he published poetry, children’s literature, and books and essays on geology, botany, church politics, political economy, painting, sculpture, literature, architecture, art education, myth, and aesthetics. A great and successful propagandist for the arts, he did much both to popularize high art and to bring it to the masses as evidenced in this volume containing two essential public addresses from 1857 on “The Discovery and Application of Art” and “The Accumulation and Distribution of Art.” Included here are Ruskin’s Supplementary Additional Papers: . Education in Art . Art School Notes and . Social Policy.ALSO AVAILABLE AT COSIMO CLASSICS: Ruskin’s Political Economy of ArtJOHN RUSKIN (1819-1900) was born in London, the only child of prosperous, self-made parents who collected art and encouraged their son’s literary activities. Throughout his life, his writings on art had an immense influence on British, European, and American architecture and industrial design.Ruskin’s immense body of literary works include Modern Painters, Volume I-IV (1843-1856); The Seven Lamps of Architecture (1849); The Stones of Venice, a collection of essays published between 1851 and 1853; Unto This Last (1862); Munera Pulveris (1862-3); The Crown of Wild Olive (1866); Time and Tide (1867); and Fors Clavigera (1871-84).

 A Woman Divided

A Woman Divided

Stunned by an exhibit of Georgia O’Keeffe at the National Gallery of Art in the late ’80′s, I became intrigued by one of America’s great artists.Responding to the images in her paintings and her fascinating life with husband, Alfred Stieglitz, the famous photographer, I began an imaginary poetic biography. She suffered conflicts still pertinent to women artists of any genre today: How to fulfill one’s gifts and be in relationship. Her love for Stieglitz and his obdurate refusal to join her when her creative path led to New Mexico created “a woman divided.” With pain we are unable to measure, she crisscrossed the country between Alfred in New York and her beloved West. After Alfred’s death, still haunted by her choice, she worked into her nineties painting the Western landscape. Her vibrant body of work remains a legacy to us all.

Aardvark, Aardvark, How Do You Do!

Aardvark, Aardvark, How Do You Do!

$23.79

Aardvark, Aardvark, How Do You Do! is a remarkable creation by the author and artist to teach a specific mode of art which uses the Elements of Design: color, line, shape, space, texture and value, Not realistically rendered this form of art is called nonrepresentational or nonobjective art. Poems and painting, thoughts from the author and aardvark and suggested exercises teach that the images stand on their own as Elements of Design. Although, you may see an aardvark as the author did. Judy O’Toole-Freel and Mirle Freel have been on a lifelong quest of creative expression. They have channeled this love through writing, the visual arts and equestrian riding and training. Although well acquainted with horses, the author has met only one aardvark and that was at a zoo. Recently she met her second aardvark through her playful imagination. While absorbed with one of the images you will find in the art book and pondering the Elements of Design that embody this mode of expression, she saw an aardvark and a redhead staring at each other. From this interpretation and use of her imagination evolved the art book, Aardvark, Aardvark, How Do You Do!The book encourages the use of the imagination and self-expression through twelve poems paired with twelve paintings in an adventure to become enlightened about nonrepresentational art. Aardvark, Aardvark, How Do You Do! is fun for all to cultivate visual literacy. It is a fundamental teaching tool to be used at home and at school in art classes and libraries. Also galleries, museums, gift shops and bookstores will want to put this superlative art book on their shelves for children and adults alike to enter the world of aesthetics through art and poetry. Plato put it well, “Art education brings grace to the body and nobility to the mind”.

Abstract Expressionism (Movements in Modern Art Series)

$3.99

The term Abstract Expressionism, though rejected by some of the artists involved, has come to signify the fascinating body of work made by American artists in postwar New York, mainly between 1947 and 1953. Artists including Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Barnett Newman, Lee Krasner, and Willem de Kooning created large-scale canvases that revitalized contemporary art in America. Although inspired to some extent by the Surrealists and by European abstract painting, Abstract Expressionism was hailed as the first truly American modern art movement, and was to have enormous influence on the activities of artists in Europe and the rest of the world. In addition to 60 color illustrations of works created by the artists of the movement, this accessible survey examines the critical response to Abstract Expressionism from the time of its heyday up until the present day.Author Bio: Debra Bricker Balken is an independent curator and writer specializing in modern and contemporary art. Her publications include The Park Avenue Cubists, Arthur Dove: A Retrospective, and Philip Guston’s Poem-Pictures.

No American art critic has been more influential than Clement Greenberg. The high priest of ”formalism, ” he set in motion an approach to art that has remained prevalent for nearly half a century. . . . In much the same way that Jackson Pollock elevated American painting to international renown, Mr. Greenberg is the first American art critic whose work can be put on the shelf next to Roger Fry, Charles Baudelaire and other great European critics. –Deborah Soloman, New York Times His work was so much a part of the dynamics of American culture between, roughly, the end of World War II and the mid-Sixties that it can”t be ignored. No American art critic has produced a more imposing body of work: arrogant, clear, and forceful, a permanent rebuke to the jargon and obscurantism that bedeviled art criticism in his time and still does now. –Robert Hughes, New York Review of Books

Six drawing classes guide the reader to see the human body afresh, offering techniques and attitudes that imaginatively show how to view and draw the skeleton, head, ribcage, pelvis, hands, and feet. Dissecting the Masters. By investigating ten Masterworks, the author demonstrates different artist’s ideas and knowledge across time, ranging from Holbein’s Christ Entombed, to Edward Hopper’s Hotel Room. Each Masterclass presents a photographed model set in the same pose, so that anatomical comparisons can be made. Understanding anatomy is often the key to an artist’s understanding and interpretation of the body. This imaginative modern reference book will enhance the drawing and painting techniques of artists at every level. Author Biography: Sarah Simblet teaches at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, Oxford University, and at the Royal College of Art in London. She has studied and worked extensively in Europe, and her drawings are in many national and private collections, and she has had three solo shows of her large-scale works. Sarah has also acted as a consultant for several radio and television programs, including the Discovery Channel. Photographer John Davis is renowned for his beautifully lit, strong images. He contributed to the acclaimed book Atlanta Dream, a collection of nude portraits of Olympic

Arsenic and Old Paint: An Art Lover's Mystery

Arsenic and Old Paint: An Art Lover’s Mystery

$14.95

Former art forger Annie Kincaid has been operating a legitimate decorative painting business for quite a while, but memories are long in the art world. Now, with the blessing of the FBI Art Squad, Annie’s using her underworld connections to boost her new art investigation business, where she’s partnered with none other than ex-art thief/ love interest Michael X. Johnson. At first it’s strictly business, but when she stumbles across a body in an exclusive Nob Hill men’s club, and an insurance adjuster asks and an insurance adjuster asks her to find a stolen (and forged) erotic painting, and then her Uncle Anton is attacked, Annie’s on the trail of more than just art. This time, she’s looking for justice. Annie is a strong woman protagonist. She has reinvented herself from a checkered past as an art forger to a legitimate businesswoman/artist. She moves easily between high and low social circles. as she makes the rounds of San Francisco and Bay Area locales, including tunnels beneath the pavements of Nob Hill and Chinatown; the homes and hideouts-even a downtown sex club-of the rich and famous; and the artists’ studios South of Market. The Art Lover’s series has an entertaining light touch, especially when either of Annie Kincaid’s two romantic interests appear. But Arsenic and Old Paint also deals with serious social issues- some history of slave trading in Chinatown, and its connection with San Francisco powers-that-were; and the male exploitation of the female and immigrant powerless, an issue that continues to this day.

Enjoy a print of this bloody deconstruction of kitsch art. Reproduced from a high-quality photograph, this print maintains the detail and visceral power of the original piece. It depicts a torn and mangled painted canvas that has been splattered with red paint. This photograph was created in the premiere episode of second season of Work of Art: The Next Great Artist. Art and Architecture in the Islamic Tradition

Art and Architecture in the Islamic Tradition

$96

What is art in the sense of the Islamic tradition? Mohammed Hamdouni Alami argues that Islamic art has historically been excluded from Western notions of art; that the Western aesthetic tradition”s preoccupation with the human body has meant that Islamic and Western art being perceived as inherently at odds. However, the move away from this anthropomorphic aesthetic in Western art movements, such as modern abstract and constructivist painting, have presented the opportunity for new ways of viewing and evaluating Islamic art and architecture. Drawing upon classical Arabic literature, philosophy, poetry, medicine and theology, along with contemporary Western art theory, the author uncovers a specific Islamic theoretical vision of art and architecture based on poetic practice, politics, desire and the gaze. In so doing, he addresses the lack of recognition given to early Islamic thought and aesthetics in comparison with other historical periods and traditions.

The book samples a wide range of Gair’s work in a variety of fields, including magazine covers and layouts, fashion campaigns, music videos, movies, and commercials.

An indispensable resource for any visual arts lover, this anthology of original writings covers modern American art and culture from mid-1940′s abstract expressionism and the Cold War right through to the late 1990′s with its proliferation of video and technological developments in telecommunications and biotechnology—giving readers a firm understanding of the evolution of artistic development within the context of major political, cultural, and sociological trends and ideas that have emerged in the United States since World War II.Presents writings from post WWII through the 1990′s and organizes them around ten central areas of discussion (American avant-garde, the beat generation, objectivity/reduction/formalism, process and materials, sculpture, politics, the return of painting, image and identity, and the body and technology). Divides chapter writings into three categories—artists, critics, and context—giving readers clear insight into the major issues that the artists’ work raises, and helping them connect the words of artists with criticisms about the art they created, exhibition reviews, and museum catalog essays. Includes selections from outside the visual arts to establish relationships between the issues and impulses raised by the work of these artists to trends and ideas that were gaining prominence within the broader culture at the time that the art was being created. For general readers of modern art history and theory and/or post-war American culture; ideal for museum bookstores.
